Oh it's a real shame. Used to be so many great old pubs and clubs. Chicos was a brilliant indie club on a Thursday night - like the Tardis when you went through up the stairs and it opened up to a bigger club. That was right by the Bus station. I might have gone to Golden when I visited again later on. Vally's/Place was Monday, with Student Union nights on Weds/Friday and The Roebuck/Tippler (RIP!)/Terrace taking up the other nights! Glad the Terrace and Glebe are still going. Was annoyed that our match at yours was midweek this season.
Yeah Chicos had that dingy entrance by the side of the bus station but opened up massive upstairs. Went a couple of times but I was more of a dance music guy in those days. I'm a bit younger than you so was very late 90s/early 2000s for my era. Monday night Vallies/The Place. Wednesday night Newcasle. Friday night Vallies/The Place. Saturday night sometimes Golden. The Roebuck was a regular especially for football even though I wasn't a student. Pints were cheap and fit students. Went to The Terrace occasionally. Can't remember Tippler. Was that the pub next door to The Roebuck that I remember as The Fawn? RIP both of those pubs. Now sadly demolished to make way for the new Sixth Form College building.
I used to live in the Place back in the late 80’s. Chico’s as well in that time period. Always had a 6th Form college student having a party there on a Monday night. Spent a lot of time in Valentinos in the early 90’s as well. Quite sad to read your current assessment of the City but not read something there I haven’t already been told about. Not step foot in Stoke (or the UK) for almost 4yrs now and no plans to do it anytime soon either (or desire if I am honest). Family are coming out here at Christmas and more at some point next year so no need us going back. As for Vale I can’t believe what has gone on. I mean for years they have rammed down Stoke’s throats how we are the thugs and they are a “family club”. I wish I could be the bigger man and wish them well next week but I can’t. I can still see that video in my head of those two slags working behind a bar in a pub in Burslum in May 2011 wearing Man City shirts singing “Why, Why, Why Do You Bother” and hardly any of those c***s would have wished us well that day. I also remember the early 90’s when they got to lord it over us for a few years. So, f**k them. In my lifetime they have pretty much always been a bottom division club so they can stay there as far as I am concerned.
I think Chicos got pretty much burned down by a fire if I remember correctly? Don’t recall when that was though. Was quite a while back I think.
Yep I think so. Hey we would have definitely rubbed shoulders in the clubs mentioned early 90’s. It was mental, remember cafe moonshine by Vallys? Ordering 15 pints at once as they were 50p each. Ridiculous! Falling asleep under the stairs and stuff. We were a mess tbh, wouldn’t change it for the world. We used to like Quenchers too, little bar by the Place. Our year are all turning 50 now, next round of parties since the stag do’s and weddings 15 years ago.
Yeah the Tippler was the Fawn. My lowest student moment was drinking Thunderbird from a brown paper bag sat over the road from the Tippler with my mates in the pub window taking the piss! I remember going past on the train when they were knocking it down. At least the Glebe is still there, I used to live on the corner of Stamer St near the away end in 93&94. Peter Shilton parked outside our house once. Loads of great memories, seeing the Manics in the Wheatsheaf in 91, Sultans of Ping FC supported by Radiohead there too, the Stoke-Wolves near riot. Packed a lot in 4 years
Yeah I agree with Vale. According to my parents and older generations there was very little rivalry between Stoke and Vale prior to the late 80s as Stoke were always in the top 2 divisions and Vale always in the bottom two with our paths rarely crossing. Stoke fans would quite often turn out for Vale games on away weekends and Vale fans sometimes turning out for big Stoke games. It all changed in the late 80s and early 90s when our decline corresponded with Vale's resurgence and we ended up regularly in the same division (either the Championship or League One) for a decade, with Vale occasionally in a higher division than us. That spell of success went to the Vale fans' heads and they started to see a Stoke-Vale rivalry as being a permanent, annual thing. They regularly had a better team than us in that period and often beat us which they loved to lord all over us. The early 2000s came and Vale declined to the lower divisions where they historically belong while we went back to The Championship and above, but their fans couldn't let the rivalry go and revelled in every important defeat and failure that we went through. It gets to the point where they seem to enjoy our failures more than their successes and it's a bit pathetic really. It's 20 years since we last played each other in the league, let it go and support your own team. And if we end up in League One again for a few years and our paths cross again, have a laugh in those games then move on once we inevitably separate again. Quenchers was probably Rosie O'Briens when I was going out. Great memories. RIP to those pubs, a bit of history passed with those and current students won't be able to experience them sadly. The Wheatsheaf is a Wetherspoons now and has been for a while. Stoke-Wolves riots were regular in those days along with Birmingham
Yes saw the Wheatsheaf had changed when we came up for the Cup 1/4 final (3-0 to Stoke). My brother got some grief in there, I was gutted Every time I hear 'Groove Is In The Heart' by Dee-Lite I instantly think of this on the TV Jukebox in the Roebuck! Shame the students won't take advantage of £1 bottles of Newcastle Brown either. Saying that, probably better in the long run tbh Oh yeah and I remember my Forest fan mate (Exec Crew) popping in and out of Uncle Tom's cabin to say hello in between scrapping with Stoke fans. Good times....
Only Stoke fans would congregate in a league two playoff thread to discuss how much Port Vale fans are obsessed with them. You lot and Swindon are made for each other, deluded bastards. Up the pigs. Popa Wallop! But good luck Mansfield Town, seem a decent bunch and not half has delusional as the aforementioned. Lets hope for a great game from the two teams good enough to win a playoff semi-final.
Haven't been on here for a while but it's good to see how popular we still are and how little Stoke fans care about us.
Hoping for a decent game tomorrow & only for monetary purposes a Mansfield win as they'd being a lot more away fans to London Road good for gate receipts & also the local ale houses .
Just looked at the line up's & Mansfield really are a team of journeymen , take the on loan 22 year old GK & Longstaff out & average team age would probably be 30+ but as the saying goes , " ol' heads " , hope it's a good watch
Hawkins - what an idiot. That's it for the Stags I'm afraid. Can't see Vale with the decent back line they have letting Stags back into the game now.
True , fans are pretty classy though albeit I think a Vale 3rd & it'll be a quicker journey home for some .
Well done to Vale , thought they exploited Mansfield's diamond with the wing backs in the first half & then the plank getting the 2 yellows pretty much game over . Love to know why our d.o.f. Barry Fry was there , free day out or a bit of scouting ?
