There's been a bit of online discourse about Barbie not getting nods for acting or directing but I totally get it. The film was great and good fun but it makes total sense to me why it didn't get nominated for those gongs.
I haven't seen Barbie so can't really comment. In fact of the 'Best Picture' list I've only seen the tedious Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, though I have Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon and hopefully Poor Things to watch in the near future.
It's funny because you have people suggesting Hollywood is trying to limit the success of a female director and a film about feminism which ultimately is so silly since... it's Hollywood in the year 2024. I think the whole same release weekend thing for Oppenheimer and Barbie meant idiots saw them as equals. I enjoyed Barbie. But if we are talking a film for the Oscars then Barbie is nowhere near what Oppenheimer offers. Barbie was ultimately about box office success. Yeah I am seeing Anatomy and hopefully Poor Things this week. Heard very good things about both.
Greta Lee not even getting a nomination (I personally think she should have been one of the favourites to win it) for Past Lives is scandalous. She was amazing alongwith John Magaro, the latter has been blanked by most awards though. Sandra Huller has a decent chance. She was good in Anatomy of a Fall, though I thought the little kid and the dog deserve a mention for best acting as well. I really hope Paul Giamatti gets it, who was brilliant in The Holdovers.
Emma Stone should be nailed on for her part in Poor Things. If you haven't seen The TV series, The Curse, yet, there's no better vehicle to advertise her brilliant acting prowess..
Seen Barbie has 8 Oscar Nominations. A film about Barbie. Having 8 Oscar nominations. For those who have seen it, is it worth it?
It's a good fun film and it is well made but if you're being a hypercritical film boff then you'd pick holes in it easily. It's quite a basic Patriarchy story that people have hyped up because it's a commentary piece that is accessible for them. It's basically an undergraduate level essay with a budget. The fact children are moaning because it hasn't been nominated for every single award just shows 8 nominations is probably a bit much. The future for film is so screwed. Popularity shouldn't dictate quality.
it seems to be a trigger for feminists. the fact Robbie and the director didn't get nominated seems to be angering them. note: do not ask any feminist which nominee should be dropped for either.
Tonight is the awards.... My predictions/who I would pick: Best picture Who will win: Oppenheimer Who I'd pick: Poor Things Best actor Who will win: Cillian Murphy Who I'd pick: Paul Giamatti Best actress Who will win: Lily Gladstone Who I'd pick: Emma Stone Best supporting actress Who will win: Randolph Who I'd pick: Randolph Best supporting actor Who will win: Robert Downey, Jr. Who I'd pick: Marc Ruffalo Best director Who will win: Christopher Nolan Who I'd pick: Christopher Nolan
Hoping Godzilla minus One gets some recognition even if it was just nominated for special effects. Best film I’ve seen in 2023.
I've been unimpressed with this year's films, nothing really stands out for me. I found The Holdovers dull, Killers of the Flower Moon garbled, Oppenheimer way too long and though I haven't seen all of Poor Things it reminds me of Edward Scissorhands.
Yeah I mean best director was a category I wouldn't mind who..I fully understand why Nolan should finally get it though. It's a stacked field. They all are.
Robert Downey Jr thanks his terrible childhood and the Academy "in that order" as he collects his award for best supporting actor in Oppenheimer. Think the bookies had this, Murphy and the film to win the gongs at 1/33 so no surprises in the theatre..
Emma looked genuinely surprised there. She has been the best actress for a while now, she is superb in everything she does..
She is brilliant in Poor Things and it would have been a real robbery for her to not win it for that performance.
