Thought Barbie deserved a bit more, however, there were a few standout nominations this year, which were unlikely to lose.
Where did Barbie lose out? Only 3 films won more than 1 last night. So many great films should have won more. American Fiction and The Holdovers off the top of my head. Heck Killers of the Flower Moon didn't win anything.
I actually thought it was going to get Costume Design and Adapted Screenplay. America Ferrera also felt like a typical performance the Academy likes to give an award to.
Randolph in The Holdovers was absolutely brilliant so that category was wrapped up. Adapted Screenplay was pretty stacked, not sure what about the dialogue was anything spectacular in Barbie. American Fiction deserved winner there. Zone Of Interest and Poor Things both ahead of Barbie there too. Poor Things deserved Costume Design. I also would have given it to Killers above Barbie in that category. Sorry don't wanna come across as a Barbie basher, I enjoyed it. But in the end it was nothing more than a good film. Whereas this year we were blessed with a number of truly brilliant films.
Is it just me, or was this years field a bit lacklustre compared to previous years? There's nothing that really compels me to watch it. Maybe I will change my mind later on viewing them? I know it's probably a little unfair, having not actually seen any of the main movies....but as I say, I don't really fancy any of them that much.
Having watched all the Best Picture nominees I can say it's just you. This year has been a very strong year. I don't know what you like but the field has a bit of everything done to an incredible standard.
I would say the only one I didn't particularly enjoy was Maestro. I'd gladly watch all the others again. Poor Things and The Holdovers were my favourites.
Have you watched all of them? Fair enough to your opinion but to say this year is very poor is silly. What was stronger about the previous few years? Elvis and Avatar 2 were nominated for Best Picture last year.
I’ve only seen Oppenheimer and Poor Things but very keen to see Holdovers, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Influence. Emma Stone fully deserving based on her performance (admittedly with little to compare to!), I thought she was phenomenal
It was between Stone and Gladstone (in Killers). Gladstone was very good but in the end it seemed to be a bit of a political decision to give her the award as the first Native American nominee. Stone was superior though, so it is right she won.
Not all, no, but as I said earlier the ones I have seen have been underwhelming. I can only comment on the ones I've seen. Still have Anatomy of a Fall ready to watch. I haven't said last year or indeed any recent year was 'stronger'? Looking back the films from the last 10 years or so that I've really rated were Green Book, Shape of Water and possibly 12 Years a Slave. There have been many, many more 'Best Picture' winners that I've thought were either unexceptional, downright ordinary or utter shite, like Birdman, Parasite, Spotlight, Moonlight and The Artist. You may consider them to be absolute classics, doesn't make you (or me) right.
Guess we just have different tastes. I though Green Book was a weak winner, though I did enjoy the film. That year is the perfect example of a weak year. Bohemian Rhapsody got nominated for Best Picture ffs. Poor Things and Holdovers for me are straight up into being favourites of mine.
Birdman and Parasite absolutely phenomenal films and groundbreaking imo. Spotlight is also one of my favourite films of all time but I’m a huge fan of the investigative journalist type film so that’s a personal favourite.
Only seen a few clips of Poor Things, what on earths it supposedly to be about as it looks right weird
I agree with this. This year actually had a good lineup of films. I still have to see Poor Things. But I enjoyed Past Lives, Zone of Interest, Holdovers, etc.
I'd just say, watch it. It's brilliant. Loved it. It's like a fantasy gothic horror comic romantic adventure film.
