    Christ, what a mixture

Yeah will give it a watch in the next few weeks. Looked like a Clockwork Orange type film to me.

The filmmaker for me is the closest example to Kubrick-esque we probably have right now.

I think it’s his best film other than the host, which personally is one of my all time favourites. Tbf bong joon ho doesn’t make bad films.

I must say, the fact a Nolan movie took most accolades, is probably a lot to do with it. I believe he is way overhyped as a film maker. Maybe he made a great movie at last? I don't dislike Cillian Murphy.

He's already made several great movies. The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Inception are all incredible films. Some of his recent work has been underwhelming for me but that doesn't erase what he's done.

Christopher Nolan is a great director. He's mainstream, he makes blockbusters but with a particular style of his own. I do find his films quite predictable but there's a comfort blanket in that. They are however always impressive and incredible to watch for the usage of FX.

Phrases like overhyped are weird to me. He is undeniably brilliant at what he does and has been for 2 decades. You don't get where he has got to by being average.

Oppenheimer wasn't my favourite but I totally get why it has swept these awards because that is how the Oscars works.

Nolan's films lack basic human warmth and I struggle to care about any of them or any of the characters in them. They also tend to rely way too much on some tedious gimmickry. He's good at directing, but not good at writing.

Yeah I reckon I agree with that. I was going to say his films really lack any real humour or relief. The Batman films were probably the best at that, but that has to happen with comic book film material to pull from.

Not saying he needs to write comedy or slapstick but through that human warmth and emotion you speak of, natural funny moments will come out. Many serious filmmakers are still brilliant at that.

Where Nolan is concerned, opinions vary clearly.

What films do you generally enjoy?

No shade, I'm not Nolan's biggest fan at all. Just intrigued since you have stated a lot of what doesn't interest you.

I'm not a great lover of super hero stuff. I like a good story. Flashy effects are not the be and end all for me.I have liked Stephen King adaptations over the years, you probably think you know where this is going, and it's Shawshank? Nope, probably my favourite go to movie over the years has been "Stand by me" And I prefer "The Green mile" over Shawshank...albeit Shawshank is a great movie. There's tons of other stuff I dip into, like some Tarantino....but not all. I do like action movies as well like John Wick but strangely, "The Matrix" movies don't grab me at all. I like Denzil Washington as an actor, And Sam Rockwell. I like movies with heart and emotion to them. The list isn't exhaustive as long as it's not mechanical plotlines and unfathomable.

absolutely and in my top 5 films of all time, maybe top 3. Every time I hear someone say Nolan’s over rated i think of this film and scratch my head in disbelief!

I also loved Batman begins, which I think is the best of the trilogy and my favourite film of this genre

I came into this thread to mention that I’ve just watched American Fiction and think it’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a long long time.

I concur. Superb, and Jeffrey Wright and his audible sighs were a joy. The ending was very clever too, and the soundtrack has been downloaded. Never really got into jazz but the music went with the cinema perfectly.
