I've enjoyed the forum during the WC, apart from a few WUMs in the last week or so. At least we finally got conclusive proof (as if it were needed) that Hull Lad is a deluded fantasist. Great WC and I'm gutted it's over, especially as I probably have a relegation battle to look forward to this season...
Was this the best World Cup of modern times? It has to be the best that I've seen, which is from 1994 USA onwards. It had everything, great goals, plenty of drama, a top final, lots of goals, a good England performance, shock upsets and no off-field issues. I think to cement a tournament in the memory it needs a great final and we got that.
Unlike World Cups of the past, there were only one or two really poor games...in the past half the games would be poor.
In prior tournaments a lot of the attacking ambition really dissipated once we got to the knockout round. 2006 was fairly enjoyable to start with but was largely dull from the quarterfinals on. This one gave us competitive games with both teams playing for the win the vast majority of the time. I never thought I'd see the day when a World Cup Final had as many as six goals.
