Although your post seems condescening, I agree we shouldn't be in the competition in the first place, but in UEFA's wisdom we are, so if we were to win it, i'm not going to go to bed early with a cup of horlicks.

Beggars can't be choosers. If the club goes tits up, who knows how many years before we win something again? It could be our last shot of European glory, so you have to enjoy it and take your chance when you get it. I still get nightmares over Athens, for what a wasted opportunity that was.

If it's condescending, in this instance, it was unintentional. I meant it in a positive sense, and largely agree with you.

I don't care what people think about Liverpool in the EL, I'm made up with last nights performance. In particular Lucas who looked absolutely brilliant, we put 4 past a very decent Benfica side and that's something to take pride from.

Glad that we're playing Torres' old club next, it ought to be a great game and I'm confident ahead of it. Athletico are a tricky team to play, great one week, shocking the next, but I think Torres will really shine.

Good decision, you're much better off with Ovaltine.

I stongly disagree. The Europa league would be shit without CL teams plus it keeps the CL group stages interesting as teams vie for the Europa league place. They do actually still qualify and it stops teams from giving up.

I think the group stages of the Europa League are largely a waste of time, and the competition only gets interesting at the knockout stage anyway, which at least we have been in from the last 32 onwards. I don't agree with the CL rejects getting thrown in though.

    It's better off as a 64 team straight-knockout.

Yeah the Europa league groups stages are a crock of shit tbh.

UEFA want their competitions to be as strong as possible. it's a big coup to have had Liverpool in the competition. it's like the FA cup, nobody gave a shit about it til people starting taking it seriously again, they want to create interest with as many stars playing in it as possible.

Apparently UEFA are thinking of cutting the amount of CL qualification places so that right there should make the tournament stronger so they might rethink the rejects thing.

Agree, plus make the Champions League like that as well. And call it the European Cup. And only let the Champions in.

Plus, here's an idea, only 2nd and 3rd place (at most) get a UEFA spot. None of the "fair play" bollocks. And why don't we have another knock out competition for national cup winners. We could call that the "European Cup Winners Cup"

Firstly, I concede ignorance, but if Liverpool win the Europa League, does that mean they automatically qualify for next seasons League, or even a CL spot?

I can't realistically accept that Liverpool will finish lower than 6th position, however, if it does materialise, this might be a lifeline to Europe that you need.

Been on the road since 7.30 this morning after agreeing with some bloke in the pub last night after the West ham game that it was possible to drive to Madrid. However I did not expect to travel in a vintage Honda Civic with 2 blokes sufferring from sever flatulence & no spare tyre. About to attempt getting through Paris via the parabolici Is the match still on? The radio has now packed in so we are lost for news. But got some great cassests(remember them) of Waylon Jennings & Lisa Minneli mostly

This is hell. i must stop drinking?

    Atlético Madrid v Liverpool

    Vicente Calderón Stadium 8:05pm (FIVE)

Looks like Rafa will continue with Agger as left-back, due to Insua still carrying a knock, plus Aurelio also carrying an thigh injury , as we all know Torres when under the knife this week, so will be out for the rest of the season. (Rumour is he may make the final?)

Skrtel out with his foot, although back in training, will remains sidelined and Maxi Rodriguez is ineligible. Youngster Martin Kelly (knee) has a knock and Albert Reira remains frozen out.

    Expected line-up:
    Reina

    Johnson - Carragher - Kyrgiakos - Agger

    Lucas - Mascherano

    Kuyt - Gerrard - Benayoun

    Ngog

SUB: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Degen, Ayala, El Zhar, Pacheco, Babel

Due to volcanic ash shutting down all flights around Europe, the Liverpool team was forced make alternative plans, forcing a gruelling 24hr Journey across Europe to get to Madrid, the journey involving couch, train & light aircraft, (Rafa's interview on the train). We haven't been very good travels in Europe, this additional travelling certainly won't help the players; Unfortunately the team will see very few Liverpool fans as they was unable to make the Journey themselves.

We need to keep a tight ship in this game, put on a good display & try keep a clean sheet, Atletico are a tough team to break down, good defensively, with some good shooting options, even with the absence of Sergio Aguero who's suspended

Atletico Madrid Team (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Ujfalusi, Perea, Dominguez, Antonio Lopez; Assuncao, Raul Garcia; Simao, Jurado, Reyes; Forlan.

Atletico Players to watch: Simao, Jurado, Reyes & Forlan

Hopping to pull off an away goal.:thumb

Got tickets from those nice people from that nice Spanish Bank that now owns the Giro but we are in with the home supporters. We will have to try & blend in somehow?
Have not met any other Red's fans at all, which is really strange so we could be on our own here. Mind you we are 3 buses away from the center. Is there anybody out there?
I reckon we are going to win tonight. The locals here are pretty pessemistic as well cause Athletico have had a shit season, worse than ours. This could be the start of something big, the season starts now. (How many times have we said that this season?)
