Manchester United chiefs have met with Barcelona over a possible deal for Mason Greenwood, according to reports in Spain.

The forward's future at Old Trafford appears to be over following an internal investigation. Greenwood was suspended in January 2022 after he was arrested on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman. He was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill but all charges were later dropped.

Greenwood was sent out on loan to La Liga outfit Getafe and has impressed with the Madrid-based outfit. He's scored eight times and has continued to influence games, catching the attention of some of Spain's biggest sides - Barcelona among them.

Marca reports that senior figures from Manchester have met with Barcelona sporting director Deco to discuss a possible deal. Atletico Madrid are also keen on Greenwood with United making it clear they want £43million for the player who came through their academy.

Greenwood's background story aside this would seem to indicate the new regime is not going to be happy being fleeced every summer. That said I see no way Greenwood can return to English football so unless there's more than one interested party he'll be sold for peanuts.

We are going to have to be flexible in term of selling players to raise some cash for new recruits. It is always easier to sell good players than bad, and we aren't going to get much for those who its obviously are surplus to requirements.

As I've said before, I think Ratcliffe's new regime will be looking for a one-off fire sale, with the most important aspect being getting players out of the club. So maybe any half-decent offer will be considered for players the club are sick of the sight of.

The club wanted rid of Maguire and McTominay last summer but refused offers that weren't considered to be high enough, I've a feeling they won't make those mistakes again.

I think you are right on that point, especially as it will remove the high salary costs we offer players, which is often a reason we cannot move on the dross. Also, I think we will be more willing to do business on players we aren't necessarily looking to move on, but would be willing to sell for a good offer.

With FFP and limited funds we'll have to raise a fair bit of money from player sales.

Doubt he'd be willing to take an 80% pay cut, and he's not even Scottish . . . :p

Even within the PL I can see the wages being a problem. Only a few other PL clubs and a handful across Europe can pay those wages. And would those few clubs be interested in and pay top dollar for (m)any United for sale players?

For England's sake I'd like to see someone take a punt on Sancho and turn him around.
