Tremendous player. Time seemed to slow around him. He always found a couple of yards around him. Slow, precise, deliberate and just oozed class.

I remember his run against Valencia. I was shouting " He has no pace just bring him down FFS."

Best player I have seen without doubt

Yes I believe he is, but it should be noted that I never saw Maradona or Pele.

I agree. I would also put the Brazilian Ronaldo as a better player. Just a shame injuries kept him out of the game for so long.

He said Paul Scholes was his toughest opponent ever, so I like him :)

Thurham, Cantona, Vieria, Zidane, Henry, Trrezequet etc all compete for the title of best french player.

You just put Trezeguet in the same breath as Zidane?

The only player you mentioned who could hold a candle to him is Cantona, but because he never achieved anything at the International level (the reason is irrelevant), and never won the plaudits Zidane did, I don't think there's a comparison.

I don't know what's worse in this post, your fishing or your spelling.

I think anyone who doesn't at least include him in the top 10 of all time should be locked in a prison in El Salvador.

It depends on how old you are and how many players you have seen I suppose.

Luckily we have a written and visual record of history, as well as statistics, to reflect on.

Of course, I wasn't being patronising. I simply meant that younger people will tend to rate players of their generation higher than earlier players, it's human nature. I had the same arguments with my dad about Matthews, Finney, Mortensen and others.

Cantona? He was good but never came close to Zidane.

Platini was some player too and not just the English hating tw*t we now know him to be.

I know they are different types of players but Zidane was my favourite and there is definitely an argument for Ronaldo as being the best I've seen in my lifetime.

The only thing is the likes of Maradona and Platine I only ever saw competing in the World Cups, so they'd pale in comparison to players I would have seen more of in this day and age.

It ensures everyone will remember him one way or another really.

Skippy, I'll definitely remember that post because I have no idea what a 'carrer' is.

For those of us slightly older several other French players from the 1982 World cup semi-finalists were every bit as good as the players mentioned so far.

Dominique Rocheteau, Alain Giresse and Jean Tigana for a start.
