Rochateau? Isn't that the geezer that scored the scorcher at Anfield in the famous St Etienne game?

I remember Tigana, classy player and Giresse, wasn't he the French captain in the early 80sish?

Quite possibly Brian, he was at St Etienne until 1980. He played in the 1976 Champions cup final v Bayern as well.

Back to Zidane...best player ever? No. Best player of our generation? Yes. One of the top five players of all time? Yes.

Great yes, top five ever ? No chance. That would make him better than the likes of Di Stefano, Puskas, Gento, Jairzinho, Best, Cruyff, Maradona, Müller, van Basten, Beckenbauer, Pele, Garrincha, Eusabio etc etc.

He is most certainly on a level with such illustrious company but he is not better.

Nope, ZZ is not the best player ever. Possibly the most technically complete player I've seen in my lifetime but I prefer players with a bit more flair...also his temper goes against his legacy. He missed a lot of WC98 through suspension and was sent off in the WC06 final.

If I'm being honest, I would agree he is the best footballer ever, closely tied with Pelé and Bestie

The best player I've seen anyway.

Followed by Gianfranco Zola - Genius.

Alot of people on here seem to get "best player ever" and "best player I've ever seen" confused. They're not the same thing. Also, people's biases hugely affect their opinions.

Eg. The best player I've ever seen is Thierry Henry, but that's only because I'm young and am slightly biased towards him - Simply magic.

I don't think it's possible to determine who is the best player ever because there are so many variables to take into account. I think we can only determine a group of the best players ever, say top 10. For a player to qualify, the majority of people must agree that he's worthy. And Zidane certainly is.

Bergkamp is a player that i loved watching.Like Zidane he was so graceful on the ball.Almost seemed to be skating across the pitch.Made running with the ball look so easy. Was almost as though the ball was tied to his boot.Scored a lot of outrageous goals as well. Can remember so well the 1982 Brazilian team and the likes of Junior,Falcao,Socrates and Zico could easily walk into an all time team of mine.Van Basten was one of the best strikers i have ever seen and as for that goal he scored in the 1988 European Championships Final well i have yet to see a better goal.
