People over analyzing a missed penalty in a friendly christ almighty some of you need to go outside and touch some grass or something. England not getting past the quarters won't be because Jordan Henderson missed a penalty in a friendly win against Romania lol.
I like Henderson but that was really poor form. You don't go against team orders just to massage your own ego. On the plus side it was only a friendly. I doubt he'll ever be taking one again considering that's the second one he's missed now. Stick to doing what you're actually good at Jordan.
The point is he overruled the designated penalty taker and then missed, nobody is suggesting the penalty was critical in any way, it just wasn't captain-like behaviour.
Yeah that's fair he shouldn't have taken it off him but the backpages of the papers making out like it was a world cup final or something lol.
I agree, and anyone can miss a penalty anyway, even the regular takers. I think Southgate has said something about it which has lit the blue touchpaper with the tabloids.
The only shocking thing about Henderson taking the penalty was it was actually on target. Thought the keeper did well but for his distribution....Grealish and Lewin the only decent performances but i doubt he'll start either .
So was DCL the designated penalty taker then? Southgate said it was Rashford and then Ward-Prowse on penalties but they both went off and he was expecting DCL to take it. Maybe I read it wrong but expecting someone to take it isn't necessarily saying that's what was agreed before hand is it?
Yeah your probably right! I just was highlighting the fact that telling someone to take a penalty and expecting someone to take a penalty are two different things.
Southgate confirmed after the match that the Everton star was next in line to take it and he would "pull rank" next time his players did not follow his instructions. "We had Marcus Rashford on penalties then James Ward-Prowse but both came off," Southgate told ITV. "We expected Dominic Calvert-Lewin to take it and I was expecting Hendo to go over to him and let him take it. We will pull rank next time." Gareth Southgate slates Jordan Henderson for England penalty miss and drops Euro 2020 hint
Can’t wait for the tournament to start if only to staunch the moaning for a few weeks. Pointless speculating about how good/crap this team are til they’re knocked out and we’ve seen the sum of what they can do in a high pressure environment… and saying that, it wasn’t even our starting XI out there!
That made me laugh but Keane is right here. If Henderson is fit I would play him, 100%, he's not glamorous but is our best option right now (if he's fit). Now if Rice gets injured and Henderson doesn't get up to speed we are really struggling in Centre Midfield.
It's interesting he didn't take JWP even with the additional slot after TAA's enforced absence. Given that Southgate normally goes with two conventional centre-mids, the only option is Rice and Phillips. I can't see Henderson getting through a full 90 given he hasn't done so for about 3-4 months.
Wish I had the energy to analyse anything to do with this England team tbh. I think the last time we were genuinely on the cusp of something was 2004 with Rooney the figurehead. Generally been a bit crap since then.
The Henderson hate has started early this tournie mate, in fact before its even started Reading some of the shite on social media is just so typical. Stoked by Roy Keane the wanker. Anyone else misses that pen no one gives a shit.
Southgate has put Henderson and Maguire under microscope/pressure by picking them in a squad while clearly injured/ unfit. IMO both should have pulled out of the squad and I’m surprised Liverpool haven’t asked him to be released in case the injury flares up while playing whist not fully fit.... Could lose him for the start of next season. He was a big miss for you last year.
The central midfield lets this team down, but otherwise it has a lot of quality and should be aiming to win. People will get behind it if we go far, as they did in the World Cup.
