Anyone who did what he did then misses the pen would get equal abuse, and deservedly so, and if he wasn't a liverpool player you wouldn't be defending him.
Don't agree, it was a stupid thing to do from a player not fit enough to be in the squad ,both him and Maguire should go home and bring in two fit players .In two minds if Grealish should be in the squad not his normal self yet.
It's started. I love how Keane is this catalyst who defines fans views jump on his every word when it suits, cry murder when it doesn't. I imagine some don't actually know what he said but just jump on the defensive. Especially given what he said had nothing to do with the penalty, and actually made sense given Henderson lack of fitness.
With every team being given an extra 3 places it looks very much like Southgate gambling with those 3 on the injured mob. If they don’t recover, he’s got the 23 man squad he’d have gone with anyway.
I do agree with you in truth. I'm more about the "Henderson hate" he's had it for years, always the scapegoat (and even with some Liverpool fans in truth)...reading social media today you'd think he'd missed a pen in the world cup final and he's the only not totally fit player to ever go to a tournie But like you say, I'd much rather he be sitting at home with his feet up, but footballers are what they are, they want to be playing, he's not played for months and is probably chomping at the bit.
Really? Some of us can form our own opinions . I have being saying for weeks , that I am fed up with the ongoing injury rubbish at EVERY single tournament. If you are injured sorry but not this year. What use is Maguire go to be ?? And I don't need some pundit to form my view.
Maguire and Henderson shouldn't be there, and neither should Rashford who's said he's going to need an operation after the tournament. England have been doing this for years and years under different managers, Beckham and Rooney among others have gone to tournaments half fit or carrying injuries.
This, basically. That said, Henderson doesn't need to be there. Although I'm no huge fan of Maguire, I can understand the thinking of taking him. Like you say though, it is a gamble when other sides will be making full use of the 26 man squad for extra depth.
I think if the drop in talent wasn't so far between Maguire and the next option then he wouldn't have been risked. As a Liverpool fan, I am always going to argue that having Henderson in the squad/team is worth it given his leadership abilities and how he brings out the best in people (when not taking penalties at least....). However, of course I can see the other side of the argument regarding taking injured players to the tournament as it very rarely works out.
Not a dig at Henderson, I like him but there are other midfielders who are fully fit who could have gone and maybe have been of some use throughout the tournament. Like you say, we're woefully lacking at centre half so I can understand the gamble in taking Maguire.
Sure they will. I'm 48 so have gone through that core England supporting period, mine was 1982-2006. I got spat out after the winker match. Too old for all this
Anyone remember when everyone was saying we'd have no chance at a tournament if Gareth Barry didn't get fully fit? It wouldn't be a tournament without someone being rushed back from injury (Beckham, Rooney, Owen)
