Not even that. England pick players on ability ahead of form all the time. His place should never have been in doubt in the first place.
Pretty much confirms he plays 3/5 at the back. RWB options of Trippier, Trent and James. RCB will be one of Walker/James. LCB Shaw and Left wing back Chillwell/Saka. 5 central midfielders to cover 2 positions in a 343 but Foden and Trent (according to Southgate) could play central midfield too. He's taken the easy option of choosing all 4 right backs but when I look at the 7 that have been left out then are any of them really big misses? Ramsdale, White, Godfrey, Lingard, JWP, Watkins, Greenwood (injury) Big pressure on you to beat Croatia and the Czechs though because you're not beating Scotland.
That's not really the issue is it, the issue is we've got two other players in that position who were key players in their teams winning their respective leagues. Four right backs in the squad ffs. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
Maybe so, but he's literally not missed a single minute of the last two Premier League seasons (becoming the only player to ever do that before) for Southampton. Baring in mind COVID shortening the last pre-season whilst also resulting in games being played closer to each other... another summer playing football this year and he's at a large risk of serious injury. He's only 26 too, not really worth it when he's got a large amount of his career ahead of him. The World Cup's only next year. A decent 2021/22 and who knows, he could be in there. Realistically he's really stretching the limits of his body with any regular game-time this summer followed by being chucked (presumably) back into playing at least 90% of Southampton games next year.
I forgot the Euros were happening until I saw a billboard today. Not as excited about it as usual, the whole fans gathering in one country is what makes these competitions for me. France/Portugal to win it.
With 10 days to go until the start of the tournament a dozen years ago you'd have seen flags galore starting to adorn windows & them stick on one's for cars but not seen a thing yet . Scotland v Wales final
If Dunk was left footed or as in vogue as Mings he'd be in that squad. Anyone who has watched Mings knows he's always close to a huge gaff and spends most games pinging 40 yard passes straight to the other teams left back or into the stand.
It's amazing what has happened to Italian football, when I was growing up, Italy was one of the elite sides to beat. For the last 10 years though, they have been massively on the decline, and that squad apart from Verratti/Donnarumma (and some aging legends) wouldn't come close to players of years gone by. I would have to google some of those players.
Southgate putting a lot of pressure on him and the team . If we don’t reach the semis will he leave ? Not reaching semis a failure - Southgate
It is utter w*ank being spread over so many countries. What next.........the World Cup in Australia, USA and in Europe during the same tournament.
It's weird isn't it, I know less about footballers on the continent now with more access to watch their leagues than I did 10-15 years ago almost never watching them play. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
Cymru's 26 GK: Hennessey, Ward, A. Davies CB: Rodon, Cabango, Mepham, Lockyer RB: C. Roberts, N. Williams, Gunter LB: Davies, Norrington-Davies CM: Ampadu, Allen, Morrell, M. Smith, D. Levitt AM: Ramsey, J. Williams, R. Colwill WF: Bale, D. James, H. Wilson, D. Brooks ST: Moore, T. Roberts The controversy in the squad is limited pretty much to two selections Dylan Levitt & Rubin Colwill. Levitt's the main controversy, and he's very much seen as Giggs' man, as someone who's come through United's youth system and been given favourable selections despite not performing well for us or doing anything in the professional game. He had a particularly unsuccessful loan spell at Charlton this season, which doesn't help his case either but has since gone out to Croatia and began to play regularly. The arguments ahead of him is Will Vaulks, a regular for Cardiff in the Championship but not been favoured at all by Giggs and Page, and is seen as not what we're after stylistically in a midfielder. There's Josh Sheehan, who is seen as more of what we're after in a midfielder, but is only playing at League 2 level with Newport. There's also Robbie Burton at Dinamo Zagreb, who's professional career looks far more promising than Levitt's but he hasn't had a look in for whatever reason. It's definitely our weakest position in terms of strength in depth, and you'd be looking at a couple of injuries for Levitt to play at all, but I think the argument's against his selection are more than fair given his performances. I understand us going with youth when it comes to fringe players, but I think everything seems to suggest that Robbie Burton should be the man to go with and it'd be nice to see what he could do given an opportunity. Then there's Rubin Colwill who's been selected despite only just breaking in to Cardiff's side, with six games at Championship level. I can't say I've seen him play, but his selection is ahead of Brennan Johnson and there's also the possibility of bringing another striker in Hal Robson-Kanu. I think the reason Colwill's been selected over Brennan, is that there's already a lot of players who are playing a similar role to Brennan Johnson in the side and it'd be hard to see him starting over the likes of Brooks, Dan James & Bale. I think Colwill offers good versatility, and could come in and play in centre-midfield where we're weak and I guess we'll wait and see on this one if he does get an opportunity. Overall I think with our selection, we're definitely set up to play five at the back. I'm not massively keen on it based on performances, but we have got results with it. We won all three nations league games playing the system, including our best performance in the decade so far (3-1 vs Finland) and in the Euro qualifiers have done what's expected (beaten Czechia, lost to Belgium). Hennessey Rodon - Cabango - Davies C. Roberts - Ampadu - Allen - N. Williams Bale - Ramsey - D. James I think that's the ideal side, at the moment we've got Davies, Ramsey, Allen & Hennessey either recovering from injury, or a long way off match sharpness in terms of minutes.
Jonny Williams is an interesting one. Called-up for his country one-day, released by his club the next. Perhaps linked to the emergence of Colwill.
It is an interesting one, on paper he shouldn't really be in the squad based on club performances. He's provided very few moments for any of his clubs, and never really been able to perform consistently. It looks like he'll be down to League 1 again next season, and he's going to have a real problem keeping the likes of Brennan Johnson out of the side who in his first professional season has already had a more successful and more productive season then Jonny will ever have. I think moving forward he's going to have to start to kick on for whichever club he's at if he wants to stay in the fold. He has obviously however produced virtually all of his biggest moments in his career for us, and we tend to play him to his strengths. If we're struggling in a game, he's definitely someone to come on and have an impact for us. In a 26 man squad, I think it's a no brainer to select him. Had we been reduced to 23 then he might not have been one to make the cut.
