That would be a big shame if he doesn't finish what he started as i spent a long time reading the books that were so much better than the tv series.
Definitely some good stuff yeah, but it's a gradual decline. One small thing I hated the most is how they completely disregarded the scale of the world, the first 4 seasons they put a lot of effort into making sure characters took ages when traveling. Westeros apparently is supposed to be the size of the African continent, so when Danni flew the equivalent of South Africa to Eygpt in 20 minutes when saving Jon and the BoB north of the wall in season 7, it was a shambolic pivot from all that world and scale building they did in the first few seasons. Also in the war between the lannisters and the Tyrells/Dawn/Danny the armies were marching from Ethiopia to Morrocco in a couple of days, it was like they just suddenly couldn't be f*cked with any kind of proper detailing anymore.
I get what you mean but it's a fantasy show at the end of the day there are far worse plotholes to pick at. I could write an essay on the issues I had I do wish I could rewatch the first 4 seasons though fresh, It was genuinely some of the best TV ever created until D&D ****ed it for shitty ass Star Wars that they didn't even end up doing.
The thing is, it's not just about them running out of source material. D&D clearly showed they could write original, quality storylines and dialogue themselves too, see all of the Littlefinger and Varys scenes in the first couple of seasons, for example. Non of that was in the books. For whatever reasons, they just rushed the last couple of seasons. They just wanted to be done and move onto all the projects they'd bagged cos of GoT imo.
Speaking of side projects, one he did, that I am very glad of, is 'The World of Ice & Fire'. It's a coffe table book, but it is phenominal for creating lore and backstory to an already well designed setting.
Oh yeah 100%, completely throwing out their work in creating the world to scale is one of many things they f*cked, it was just something that really bugged me the most, as I absolutely loved the world they built. Whoever is the first to make a console open-world game of Westeros will make a lot of money. Yeah, there's also some good dialogue as well in the later seasons. They just didn't really have a clue how to develop characters and tell a story that wasn't riddled with plot holes once on their own, they were amateur at best when it came to that. Adapting source material + dialogue they're clearly very good at, it's a shame that the show overtook the books as they were a perfect partnership to GRR in putting his story to screen 100%.
Yeah was just about to say as I did some digging, thank god. I know RDR's map was twice as big as Skyrim, but RDR did come out 6 years later or whatever it was so not sure who would be better placed, both would do a fine job I'm sure. Whoever does make it though, the map would have to be groundbreaking in size - I'm talking probably 25-50x the size of RDR2, not even sure that kind of technology is out there yet for a project like that, to really do Westoros justice though it has to be a proper monster record breaking map. It's potentially 10+ years away.
Been rewatching this again last few weeks and down to the last 2 episodes. Still don't see the huge drop off in quality. Yes it doesn't take 3 episodes to get places anymore but I was and still am kinda happy the pace got a bit quicker(actually think it makes it more dramatic).
From what it sounds like the directors simply wanted to move on. GRRM gave them essentially 3-4 more seasons of material jammed packed into one final season. It explains the plot holes, certain endings not making any sense, and Dany going mad which caught fans off guard.
How can her going mad be a surprise? By the time she gets to dragonstone she's literally a mass murderer
Oh I agree, I always saw it coming. I think had there been more seasons, it would’ve made sense to others as we would see her gradually go mad and paranoid with Jon’s identity revealed.
The ending that people don’t like is the ending that GRRM gave them. There is literally no way that he gave a couple of scriptwriters licence to finish is story, yet that is what a lot of people seem to think?? I’m fine with the ending and the last season. It certainly didn’t ruin the show for me I’m also fine with the last season overall. People stating that it needed another 3-4 seasons maybe aren’t taking in to consideration how big some of the main cast had become. Was it even feasible for them to do another 3 seasons without having to have to recast some actors?? I’m speculating but I think it’s quite possible
It was his ending. Agreed. I think the issue though was that GRRM had 3 seasons worth of material crammed into 6 episodes. Everything felt rushed, plot holes, things didn't make sense, etc, etc, etc. That is where the dissatisfaction arises.
