It would be good if Starmer had the balls to make some changes to the Brexit deal, but any revisions would be hailed as betraying Brexit, so I don't think he will risk it.
Hopefully once elected he'll open up about it a bit more. Can understand why he's being so quiet on it because there's still a communal 'putting fingers in ears and going la la la' going on amongst leave voters when it comes to the now very obvious failure of Brexit. I think there are gradual signs of the wall of silence crumbling and I've started to notice some admissions that things aren't going well appearing in right wing media like The Telegraph. But a lot of people nailed their colours and reputations very firmly to the Brexit mast and were extremely vociferous in their support, and people generally don't like admitting when they're wrong particularly if they were very passionate and public about the thing they were wrong about. Britain is now irrationally terrified of freedom. It should just rejoin the EU
There are more opinion pieces like the one you shared, but I still think there is a way to go before changes become palatable amongst some sections of society and the media, when it comes to Brexit. We should get more of an idea in the Labour Party manifesto, if we are going to return to normal where governments set out their plans and try to follow them through. Hopefully you are right, as it would help the country, but I am not convinced Starmer will tackle this one.
Pretty much this. We are going to continue to wear our shitted pants because a large portion of the country wants to keep pretending it's okay to shit yourself.
Honestly think it just needs a few to break the water and admit what everyone knows that Brexit has been, always was going to be, and always will be a massive failure. Then the floodgates will open. All the media and politicians and the vast majority of the public know it deep down we should be going back to the eu with our tails between our legs and asking to at the very least stop this hard Brexit and rejoin the single market but are too scared to bring it up again in case those few fringe weirdos who still try and convince themselves it was the right decision get angry about it.
There two aspect to this debate. a) how far the EU changed away from the EC with the 27 states and how far certain portions want to go b) a bloody great trading block of 500million people all round the UK. 90% of the eu is fine. good standards and such and genuine meat when they FINALLY get round to something. 10% of the eu is not fine I don't blame anyone for not liking some aspects of the EU in terms of overcontrol or loss of soverignty or whatever but I do blame them for the taking our jobs mentality about eastern europeans and such. The reality is B could not nor never can be gotten away from. We've cost a lot of trading money and lost a lot of influence and also lost a lot of efficiencies due to brexit and they are not coming back. Companies up and down the UK will be losing every single day just operating the border trade and paperwork.
That's absolute shite. 'Brexit' has barely been enabled and certainly the aftermath has been run by utter ****wits who are not only incompetent but active political opportunists who never bought into it, yet retain power via an antiquated political system. Go PR. Power to the people. See the power transfer over to those who truly believe in an absolute break from the EU, it's nonsensical statute book and to those who have a genuine vision of creating a state that's wholly independent and able to determine it's own future, and thrive. Once the filth in Westminster has fully been eradicated, and filled by a nationalist, social Democratic party, then we'll see the true meaning behind why we left the EU and the many successes that are to come.
