    From Skysports.com

Newcastle United are set to seal a deal for Freiburg star Papiss Cisse, Sky Sports understands.

The 26-year-old has emerged as one of the most feared strikers in Germany over the past 18 months.

He scored 22 goals last season and has already scored nine this term.

The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa have all been strongly linked whilst Sunderland were understood to be close to sealing a deal last summer.

The Black Cats have again been strongly linked this January, but it is now believed that Newcastle are close to pulling off a transfer coup.

Cisse has been away with Senegal, coincidentally with Newcastle's Demba Ba.

Cisse is now flying into Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalise the deal before flying back out to Africa.

The deal, which will be worth around £10million, is sure to shock many as it was thought Newcastle's only target this month would be a new central defender.

Freiburg have already moved to sign a replacement after bringing in Sebastian Freis from Cologne on Tuesday.

    SURELY NOT :eeek

Confirmed, £10mil. Been given the #9 shirt too. So who's off? ;)

FWIW, of what I've seen of him (not loads btw) he looks a good bet for the prem and a good player to boot. Certainly has a recent record that makes for nice viewing. I'll stick my neck out and say this signing will be a success.

    Firstly, congratulations...you lucky, lucky twats.

Secondly, I'd say he's just as good as Ba and their partnership could be amazing.

But thirdly....isn't he at the ACON?

He is indeed. Lets just hope Senegal get knocked out in the group stages... Doubt it tho.

Looks like Best, Shola and even Ben Arfa will have to keep the goals coming until Feb

A couple of reports are suggesting that Best or Lover may be on their way, with Best going to Wolves. We can all see that Best, like Shola, is never going to be a top Premiership striker, and many would say neither could be described as fair Premiership strikers.

I'd say ship out Best, Shola (but thanks all the same) and Lover, as well as Smith asap.

Smith is on his way to MK Dons, Best might by sold but Lovenkrands said in the press today that he wants to stay and fight for a place.

Your club has put in a final £4m bid for Adrian Mariappa. I think this will be accepted by our club.

I hope so, we seriously lack options at centre back right now, Mariappa looks like a good prospect from what I have seen of him.

Our best player and easily one of the best centre halfs in the Championship. He's better than Mike Williamson IMO.

He's a good footballer as well as being a good defender.

Ok, nobody in, but we've kept all our top players. So I'd give this transfer window 7/10. It would have been great to get in a winger or defender, but at least there wasn't a repeat of last season's window that many of us were scared of.

What happened to the Watford lad? Gotta give the championship outfit a bit of respect for holding on to one of their better players.

As soon as I saw that Newcastle had put in a £4m bid I just assumed that he'd be off as thats a huge amount of money to us. But he played in our 2-0 win last night so it looks like he's staying put. Just shows you how important he is to us and how highly we rate him, but I really am surprised that we could turn that sort of offer down. I think selling Sordell to Bolton though is the main reason why we have kept hold of Mapps.

He did a good job for us when we needed him and played especially well with Ba. I cant see him getting into our team very much now that weve got Cisse and Shola the mackem slayer, which is a shame because he worked hard to please the fans when they were on his back last year and proves most of us wrong. He's a very good squad player for us at the moment.

If he goes, i hope he goes somehwhere where he will get first team football. he deserves it.

For us he was a squad player, but when called upon he put in a reasonable shift.
He scored very little and had limited creativity in his game, but he's a premiership midfielder.

Massively improved this year was a bit surprised to see him go but was never going to be our first choice. Will do really well for your lot if you get him!

Well we're not paying £20m for him. If we can buy the likes of Papiss Cisse for £11m why would we?
