Good result for my Blues, won by a point but it's a long way to go yet till the end of the season. Harry the hero as Blues produce epic comeback to stun Lions
Yaaaay a new season. No idea on the results between Swans v Melbourne and Lions v Carlton. Got two games to watch starting now. Bring it on. This is my first full season as only started watching halfway through the last campaign. Bit of a novice.
Lots of unsavoury stuff going on during the off season with cases of domestic abuse, racial slurs and homophobia, plus Jimmy Webster has just been banned for the first seven matches for a tackle - if you can call it a tackle, I’d call it assault - on a North player last season. And I’m not even going to mention Alistair Clarke or Tarryn Thomas.
Bloody hell what a remarkable game with Carlton beating Lions by 1 point. 40 odd points behind was expecting a thrashing here. Best game of the season so far. What is it with the supporters in black hats and tops that look like are wearing a jacket and tie ?
In an impressive piece of planning, one whole section of the Gabba is decked out in uniform, paying respects to the classic Blues Brothers movie released in 1980. While the shirts appear to be printed, rather than full suit and ties, the vast majority of the section is donning the distinctive outfit, including the famous fedora hats John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd wore throughout the movie.
Just bought my ticket for the Doggies' opening game next Sunday against the Dees at the G. £15 for general admission, you can't knock that..
Well, that's 2 in a row for my Blues...just, just hoping now we get a result that is not a ruddy cliffhanger.
Surprised how close the Richmond kids got in the end, it's a club in transition and a long way off winning those three flags when I first got here, they really were the team to beat seven years ago..
That was a thumping for Coll. Defending champs played two lost two. When was the last time that happened ?
Geelong won the title in 2022 but in the opening season of 2023, they lost the first 3 on the trot against Collingwood, Carlton & Gold Coast Eagles and then won the next 5 on the trot, as I said before, early days yet.
As my learned friend states above, the Cats had a poor start two years ago and still won the flag, the difference this year is everyone hates Collingwood.
Why are they disliked. Wondering.......do they have transfer fees in the game like in football, if not what if a player wants a move part way through the season ? Still learning about the sport.
I dislike the Magpies (Collingwood) and the Bombers (Essendon) because I have 2 big-headed brothers-in-law out there who followed the latter and they hated my Blues (Carlton).
Ask three fans in the street and they'll give you a different answer. When the game was based in Melbourne 90 or so years ago, you supported your local team, and Collingwood was a very working class area full of Irish catholics, so when they started winning every year the other clubs' fans resented them, calling them feral dogs (they still do) and other worse names. They won a lot of flags in those early days and their support grew and grew and now they have a following all over the country which obviously brings more resentment.
Well, the Dogs came out of the traps a lot quicker than the Dees and we kept it surprisingly close for three quarters, but then the class of Melbourne and the inexperience of the Doggies showed in the fourth and the scoreline might have been a bit unfair. It was so hot in the ground yesterday I nearly never bothered, especially as a fun run for some charity blocked loads of streets off in the CBD, but glad I went in the finish, I always feel much the better for visiting the MCG, it's such a magnificent stadium..
THE AFL has broken its all-time crowd record for a single round of football, with more than 413,000 people attending the nine games in round one. The crowd for Fremantle's match against Brisbane on Sunday evening took the round tally to 413,405 spectators, surpassing the previous record of 400,401 for round one, 2017. Unsurprisingly, the biggest crowds of the weekend came at the MCG, with the Carlton v Richmond, Collingwood v Sydney and Essendon v Hawthorn games all surpassing 70,000 fans. Crowds in Round 1, 2024 Carlton v Richmond at the MCG - 83,881 Collingwood v Sydney at the MCG - 78,933 Essendon v Hawthorn at the MCG - 73,805 Greater Western Sydney v North Melbourne - 8,034 Geelong v St Kilda - 39,352 Gold Coast v Adelaide - 11,466 Melbourne v Western Bulldogs - 44,100 Port Adelaide v West Coast - 33,230 Fremantle v Brisbane - 40,604 Raise the roof: AFL crowd record smashed in round one
What a crazy game between Gold Coast and Adelaide. Absolutely horrendous weather and GC were coasting with a 31 point lead with just under 10 to play. Went right down to the final seconds with GC winning by just 6. Loved it.
